About Me

My photo
I currently study and live in Birmingham and am in my second year of university, undertaking a degree in media and communication. I used to blog (about fashion, style, clothes etc.) but for various reasons stopped. However, I now find myself at a point where I have more developed and informed opinions on an array of different things, including the fashion industry. This blog is not going to be photos of outfits and clothes, but my view on a multitude of topics surrounding the fashion industry. Fashion is something that I love but as media undergraduate I want to write articles that avoid the wishy washy adoration so commonly reflected in fashion blogs and magazines. It's interesting to look a little further and dig a littler deeper.

I'm running away with you, from yesterday's news

Right now my love for Pete Doherty is sky rocketing, every time I listen to the song for lovers I go all goosey and fancy him a little bit more. There is no doubt in my mind that it is a beautiful song and I don't think any amount of plays could ever change that. I am fully aware that there has been a bucket load of controversy surrounding him in the past but to me the only thing I care about is his music, Babyshambles, Libertines, I love it all. Enough said.
(p.s. awfully sorry about my absence, it is a result of uni interview, exam prep, coursework, oh and Christmas)

Uni, halloween and Lykke li

I've been a bad bad blogger this month :( But in my defence I have had bucket loads of stuff to do, such as my UCAS form (which is in the process of being sent off now) and I've really had to knuckle down with my school work as well. There has been a few other bits and bobs that have happened recently as well. I went to two halloween parties last week (dressed as a vampire) and last night I went to go see to Lykke Li in Camden! It was really fun, and atmosphere was brilliant. Oh and Lykke Li was awesome too.

jumper;H&M, shorts; Topshop
Here is an outfit I wore when I went to St Albans with my mum last week.

fashion trends I will not be wearing: creepers

So right now creepers seem to making an appearance in the fashion world and despite the amount of people that seem to be taking them in their stride (see what I did there?) I will definitely not be seen wearing them this season. I remember seeing them on the backs of vintage store shelves and being completely bemused at the prospect of wearing them, and my feelings have not changed since then. To me they're not attractive and don't fit in with the style of clothes I wear, that being said this doesn't mean that other people can't wear them and rock them. In my opinion it takes the right person with a unique sense of style to pull them off successfully, and that person is not me.

Top to bottom: River Island £30, Jeffrey Campbell $164, Topshop £60, Underground at ASOS £85
A range of high street stores have now started to sell them each varying in price, so if you do fancy getting a pair of creepers there should be some to suit every budget.

weekends and weekdays

So on Saturday I went to Nottingham, but being the forgetful person that I am, I forgot to take my camera. I know, I know, I'm a bit useless sometimes. I also forgot to photograph my outfit which was a shame because I really liked it. Anyway, the uni was okay, I don't hate it but I don't love it either, not much more I can say about that. After looking round the uni I went for a wander round Nottingham centre, mainly just the shops really as it is quite a big place and my feet were tired. There is quite a nice assortment of shops there ranging from low end high street to designer and I also managed to find some cute and quirky shops and vintage stores. I got an odd vibe from when wondering around so I'm not completely sure about my views on the place as a whole. It didn't help that there was a fight between the football supporters at the station. It's difficult as that could potentially be my home for the next 3 years of my life.

Kicking myself for not remembering to go into Selfridges to check out the new Monki stock there. It bugs me that you can't order online at Monki as I adore their clothes so much. Weekday is also another store I would love to purchase some clothes from but unless they open up a store in England I shan't be able to. However I still looked on their website and did some wishing, and here is what I am loving right now from them. I really would love a pair of chelsea boots, but quite a manly structured pair, so these Monki ones fit the bill nicely. The selection here sums up what I like right now; simple good quality clothes that work well together. I love to just through on a jumper over a shirt and be done, it's so classic and fuss free.

simply smart

Shirt; Bershka, skirt; H&M, shoes; Topshop
Currently I am very uninspired which I put down to the immense amount of stress that has been put on me recently from school. So, unfortunately this is affecting the blog, I just simply can't think of anything to write so I feel it better not to write at all. However, I do have an outfit post to show you, albeit rather plain and boring. I love the smart look right now, and as a result have acquired a reasonable amount of shirts resulting in this look. Not much to say about it really. I do really love my new shoes though, how could I have lived this long without owning a pair of brogues!

easily found

This past week has been rather busy! Firstly I have had to do lots of work for art which involved starting a new project and finishing off another (I still haven't finished what I was meant to). I also had to take Bonzo to the vets which was a bit of hassle, but I won't go into that. Then Friday my friends had a joint 18th party, Saturday I had work, then on Sunday I went shopping. So I have got lots of goodies to show you from my trip.

H&M - Blue Jumper £14.99, burnt orange/red shirt £9.99, skirt £3.99
Forever 21 - check shirt £16.75, necklace £3.90
Topshop - Bruce t-shirt £22, black leather brogues £30
I sort of went a bit mad and spent quite a bit of money, but it isn't something I do very often so I will forgive myself for parting with most of my money. I wanted some new pieces just to spruce up my wardrobe as I felt a bit uninspired with the clothes I have at the moment. I think now is a lovely time to go shopping as all the stores have just put out their autumn stock. I partly went shopping just to check the new Forever 21 store on Oxford Street, and I must say that it is amazing! It is super big and is decorated beautifully, I know a few people have said that the clothes aren't that great but I really liked the selection they had there. So, if you haven't been already, go check out the new Forever 21.

charm me

Dear bank account, please, in anyway possible, become larger.

No matter how many times I ask, it will never be big enough for me to buy even one of these beauties. That, however, does not stop me from staring at them and wishing that I could get my hands on them. After all they are stunning pieces of jewellery and therefore deserve to be appreciated. It is very hard to pick a favourite, but if I had to choose it would probably be the antler by Giles and Brother closely followed by the Aurelie Bidermann dreamcatcher. I love all Aurelie jewellery, it almost seems as if there are two sides to the jewellery. There are simple gold and silver pieces that have been carved into that create quite a sophisticated yet grungy feel. On the other hand, there are bright, elaborate pieces, bursting with colour that have a fun and youthful feel to it, kind of festival chic. It's fair to say I love it all, if only my bank account did too.

this is your town

Over the past few days I have been desperately wanting autumn to arrive, but, of course, it is still August so I have a little while to wait. This desire for the season to change is probably partly due to all the stores bringing out their autumn/winter collections, therefore making me want to buy them, and due to it being the height of summer I have no way to justify buying them right now. That said, England is known for its shabby weather, so it wouldn't be a waste of money as I would be able to wear most of the clothes almost all year round. I keep telling myself this as a way of justifying going on a massive shopping trip; so far no use.

All items are from Topshop apart from the shoes
I found these lovely items on the Topshop website (surprise surprise) and am really wanting to buy them all, but alas Topshop prices are on the higher end of my budget, so all of this would be out of the question. I included a pair of vans and converse both in black because I simply love the idea of black shoes with black skinnies right now. Definitely going to buy the converse. These items sum up my winter look really; jeans and a baggy tee or cosy jumper.

p.s. I started my new job yesterday at the pharmacy in the next town along from where I live. Didn't get off to a great start, but the pay is decent. It feels good to be earning my own money.

to Devon and back

I haven't blogged in a rather long time (I find myself apologising a lot recently)but the reason for that is that I have been to visit my family in Devon, and I must say it was a lovely experience. I always enjoy my visits down to the seaside, not only because I get to see my family and have a jolly good chin wag, but also because I love the atmosphere that you get when staying at a seaside town. It just feels like home to me, I am able to think more clearly and relax so I always come back refreshed and content, but of course a little bit sad to have left. As always I did see some things that caught my eye whilst I was there, so I have decided to show you.

all but the tights are from H&M

First necklace I found in a flea market and got for £10, I can't remember what type of stone it is sorry. The cross necklace is from Topshop which I found in the sale for only £1.50!!

Finally got my hands on Peach Melba by Barry M and I also picked up a base/top coat as I had been meaning to pick one up for a while

I managed to find a copy of Tess in a charity shop in Topsham (if you're ever passing make sure to stop and have a look around it is beautiful and they have an amazing antiques warehouse). Whilst looking for Wonderland magazine in whsmith, and failing, I found Oh Comely magazine and bought it instead. I have only read a few pages so far but I must say it is a delightful magazine, each page is filled with beautiful photographs and illustrations and features a range of charming articles.

dancing with the devil

tunic; h&m, boots; primark, belt; topshop
In the usual type of british summer weather this outfit would be fine, but recently it has been roasting, but it's the kind of heat that overwhelms you and isn't very pleasant. Therefore making it quite difficult to do very much, oh how I long to be back on holiday. Anyway, back to the point of this post. The outfit. The tunic is actually a top but in a size 16 so it completely swamps me without the belt. It would be cute in the autumn with black tights and a leather jacket.

the Film List

I have managed to come up with a rather long 'film list' and I am dying to watch them all, but I may have some trouble as some haven't been released yet. Despite this I thought I would share my list with you, you never know you might find yourself adding them to your 'film list' too. I appologise for the description (or lack of) but you have to understand that 1. I have never watched any of the films, I have only watched the trailer and 2.I am no film critic or writer, so have no experience in this type of writing. So instead I have decided to pick out fitting quotes that sum the films up.

Kaboom: written and directed by Gregg Araki, featuring (the weirdly attractive) Thomas Dekker, Haley Bennet and Chris Zylka. "teen sex comedy, a murder mystery and a supernatural thriller into one weird, wonderful curio"
Break my Fall: written and directed by Kanchi Wichmann, featuring Kat Redstone and Sophie Anderson. "they fall out of love with one other and subsequently lose control over their lives"

Treacle Jr: Written and directed by Jamie Thraves, featuring Aidan Gillen and Tom Fisher. "by the time the credits roll onto the screen, the film has challenged and inspired you, little by little working its magic, etching away the mid week blues as it gently warms the heart"

The Tree of Life: written and directed by Terrence Malick, featuring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain. "growing pains and sibling rivalry, of faith and fortitude, of the struggle to provide, of the obligation to protect and educate our children, of how life can be given and taken away"
The Princess of Montpensier: directed by Bertrand Tavernier, featuring Mélanie Thierry, Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet and (the absolutely gorgeous beauty) Gaspard Ulliel. "evocative and thought-provoking screenplay, which darkly depicts the corruption jealousy can have upon innocence"

Restless: directed by Gus Van Sant, featuring Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper. "small, sweet, self-conscious and full of little pleasures"
The Sleeping Beauty: written and directed by Catherine Breillat, featuring Carla Besnaïnou, Julia Artamonov, Kerian Mayan and David Chausse (yummy). "constantly surprising, thought-provoking investigation of the female psyche" (this is the film I want to see the most out of all of them but it might not even be released on DVD, sob).

Love Like Poison: written and directed by Katell Quillévéré, featuring Clara Augarde and Michel Galabru. "quiet but confident, about the moments and months when you lose your childhood innocence"
Never Let Me Go: Originally written by Kazuo Ishiguro and directed by Mark Romanek, featuring Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley. "the new bleak blockbuster"

Midnight in Paris: written and directed Woody Allen, featuring Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams. "an American in Paris who finds he can travel back 100 years every midnight"
Blue Valentine: written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, featuring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. "Blue Valentine warms your heart and then freezes it over".

Sleeping Beauty: written and directed by Julia Leigh, featuring Emily Browning, Rachael Blake and Ewen Leslie. "this anti-erotic fairytale mystery is weirdly haunting"
Heartbeats: written and directed by Xavier Dolan, featuring Xavier Dolan, Monia Chokri and Niels Schneider. "transports the emotions to a heightened state"

lets go together

This has to be one of my favourite outfit combinations, ever. I just love the idea of taking the ultimate girly dress and pairing it with a leather jacket and big bulky biker boots. Personally, I don't like wearing outfits that are overly girly and feminine as I simply don't feel very confident in them. But, taking one or two girly items and putting them with accessories or other pieces of clothing that are quite grungy can give the outfit a completely different look.
I often put masculine jackets/coats over the top of dresses or skirts; a leather jacket is a must. All these jackets are from All Saints, ranging from £147.50 to £395. Obviously jackets are restricted to the cooler months or night time, but a pair of boots can be worn throughout the year, my favourites are my Dr Martens, but all these boots are Kurt Geiger and range from £49 to £190. Lastly, the girly dress. You can get all different kinds of feminine dresses with different cuts and fabrics but my choice is always one made of lace. The first dress is from Warehouse, the second French Connection and the last three are Topshop, ranging from £40 to £110.

guess who's back

Hello! I am back from beautiful Madeira (unfortunately). I actually arrived home late Monday afternoon, but i've just been overly tired this week and wanted to get this last week of sixthform over. This is just a quick post to let you know that I'm back and will be back to blogging, I shall do a holiday post sometime soon when I feel less sleepy. Its not very notcieable in this photo but I do have a lovely tan and the sun has turned my hair a lot lighter, it does look like I have had blonde high lights, but its in a different part in this photo. My tan is fading already, how depressing and England being England, its horrible weather meaning I can't top it up.
ps my camera is no fit state to pictures right now and is going to the camera store to be sorted out on Monday, booo :(

A slightly different outfit post, but I kinda like it. The velvet shorts are my friend's and are from River Island.

holiday haul

First of all, this post wasn't meant to be a haul, insted it was meant to be an outfit/photography post but I couldn't get my desktop to work which has photoshop on it. So I have to do that at school tomorrow. Right, on to the haul. This is a collective haul, all of which is for my holiday next monday. It looked like a lot more in the bags, that might be because I haven't included some items as they were quite boring and also because some were underwear. I did buy a super cute crop top from Topshop in the sale but when I got home I realised it had a whole in it so it has to be taken back. All the things I got were all reasonably cheap because I didn't want to spend a great amount before my holiday, so if you see some items you like you won't feel as bad about buying them.

No. 7 eyeshadow brush from boots was £6.75 but I had a £5 voucher so it was only £1.75 which is a massive bargin. The quality is amazingly good.

All these beauty items are from Superdrug or Wilkinson and are all relatively cheap, I can't remember the prices off of the top of my head. The shirt is from Primark and cost £6, its quite sheer so I'd deffinitely put a cami underneath, but I am also planning to wear it as a cover up by the pool.

These are both from Newlook. The top was £1.99 and the dress was £14.99, both are very good prices. The top is more of a burgundy colour and is super soft, they have them in a range of colours. The dress is quite sheer when you put it on, but it's still wearable.

The top is from River Island and was £7.99 because it had £7 off, not sure if they still sell them because I got this before they started their massive sale. The shorts are from Topshop and were £26 but I got them for £20.80 because it was 20% for students that week. They still sell the shorts and although they are labelled as hotpants they aren't as short as other hotpants I have tried in Topshop.

I have fallen in love with these sunglasses! I didn't think they would suit me at first but when I tried them on they looked perfect. They were £13.99 from River Island, so not too expensive for sunglasses, especially as they are quite good quality ones. The case was also from River Island and was £4 in the sale, which I thought was a bargin. They had loads of them in a box by the tills, so go check it out.

Lastly, I got a bikini from Newlook whic was £7.99 for the bottoms and £12.99 for the top, but I did get a student discount so it was slightly cheaper. They are sold as seperates but they only had the same size for both top and bottom left, but I tried it on and it fitted me perfectly which was pretty lucky.

Sorry for the long post but I didn't want to not do a post if that makes sense? Also sorry for the poor quality of the some of the photos, I took them when it was getting dark so some of the colours didn't show up properly.
